Glaucoma Surgery
Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)
Dr Roelof makes use of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT). This means that a laser which works at very low intensities is used to treat specific cells “selectively”. The benefit of this treatment is that the untreated fractions of the trabecular meshwork stay completely intact. For this reason, it is safe to repeat the SLT treatment.
SLT may be an alternative when other procedures were unsuccessful. However, in most cases, it will still be necessary to use medication to maintain normal eye pressure. But, surgery may reduce the medication range.
Glaucoma drainage
In some cases, Dr Roelof inserts a ‘tube shunt‘ or glaucoma drainage device into the eyes. This implant helps provide extra drainage of fluid inside the eye to lower the pressure in the eye.
